    Why is it Important to Support Your Urinary Tract and Bladder?

    The urinary tract is extremely important to the body and it’s primarily responsible for filtering out waste products and flushing them out of the body.


    Your kidneys start this process by filtering your blood to remove excess fluids, waste products and anything toxic your body wants to be rid of. The kidneys produce urine to flush these waste products out of the body.

    Urine then passes down a tube (ureters) from the kidneys to the bladder. Once your bladder gets full, your brain sends a signal to let you know that it’s time to pee.

    Although the process is unconscious up until this part, we can consciously control when to urinate or not. When we’re ready, we relax the sphincter at the top of the urethra (the tube that is connected to the bottom of the bladder) and the urine will start to flow out of our bodies.

    What causes UTIs to develop?

    Urinary tract infections most commonly occur when E. coli (bacteria found in the digestive tract) enter the urethra opening. The reason why women experience UTIs more commonly than men is because their urethra is shorter, and also closer to the anus where E. coli can be found.


    It’s especially important to treat UTIs quickly and effectively to stop bacteria ascending up your urinary tract. If the bacteria reaches your bladder, cystitis can occur (inflammation of the bladder).

    If the bacteria continues to ascend the urinary tract, it can reach the kidneys and cause further infection (pyelonephritis) which if left untreated, can cause long lasting damage to the kidneys and also carries a risk of contracting sepsis (blood poisoning) which can be fatal.

    Can you test for UTIs?

    If you think you have a UTI, it’s best to speak to your physician who can arrange for a urine test to be carried out.


    UTIs can be discovered by taking a urine test, where your urine sample will be analyzed under a microscope to check for signs of infection (white blood cells and bacteria).

    Blood tests can also be used, as well as a CT scan, ultrasound, cystography and other imaging tests to determine if there is any infection further up the urinary tract in the bladder or kidneys.

    There are many lifestyle changes you can make to support the health of your urinary tract, including your bladder and kidneys to decrease the chances of developing an infection:

    1. Eat a nutrient dense, varied organic diet. While what you eat and drink aren’t necessarily considered to be risk factors [1] in the development of UTIs, certain foods, such as yogurt, contain healthy bacteria that help to prevent and fight infection.
     
    1. Boost your immune system. A compromised immune system is associated with higher chances of contracting a UTI. There are many ways to boost your immune system such as the point above (good diet), regular exercise (150 mins a week at least), stopping smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, drinking alcohol in moderation, getting enough sleep and reducing stress.

    2. Don’t hold your pee! Holding urine in for too long can increase the chance of developing a UTI [2]. It can also overstretch the bladder muscles, causing them to slacken which can lead to inability to empty your bladder fully (urinary retention or incontinence).
    3. Clean your genitals before and after sex. Making sure you and your partner are clean before you go at it will lessen the chance of any unwanted bacteria entering your urethra. Maintaining good rectal hygiene (especially in women) may help lower the chance of developing a UTI.
      Using condoms will decrease this chance even further.
    4. Urinate immediately after sex, and drink plenty of water. Peeing straight after sex may help flush any unwanted bacteria out of the urinary tract.
      12-15 cups of water daily should ensure proper flow to help flush bacteria out of the urinary tract.
    5. Do Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises target the pelvic floor. They are particularly important to strengthen muscles around the bladder to keep any unwanted spills at bay.
     
    The strengthening of these muscles can also help to avoid unwanted infections getting through to the bladder.

    1. Wipe front to back. Wiping from back to front will increase the chances of bacteria from your anus entering your urethra and causing a UTI.
    2. Stop using a diaphragm. Diaphragms can harbor bacteria such as E. coli, as well as promoting their growth [3]. This is especially worse for women who are already prone to UTIs. Consider changing to a different form of contraception.
    3.  Stop using scented soaps. Using scented soaps can irritate vaginal tissues and can alter the vaginal microbiome, making you more susceptible to UTIs. This also stands true for bubble baths, cleansing sprays and so forth.
    4. Support your urinary tract with vital minerals and nutrients to decrease the risk of developing UTIs, while supporting your bladder:
    D-mannose. A type of sugar that is found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, broccoli, apples, green beans, peaches - D-mannose can help to treat and prevent UTIs by preventing infectious bacteria, such as E. coli, from being able to clasp onto cells and cause infection in the urinary tract.

    There have been many studies on the efficacy of D-mannose. One such study on women with active UTIs found that symptoms for most women improved [4].

    Another study saw the comparison of D-mannose and antibiotics in treating and preventing UTIs. It found that the mean recurrence time was 52.7 days with antibiotic treatments, compared to 200 days with oral D-mannose [5].

    Cranberry juice powder. Cranberries are a great source of D-mannose, and have been used for hundreds of years as an effective treatment for UTIs.

    Hibiscus flower extract. Scientifically known as hibiscus sabdariffa linn, or more commonly known as roselle - hibiscus flower has been used traditionally as an anti-inflammatory agent. Renal (of the kidneys) inflammation can be a key event in UTIs.

    A study on the effect of a roselle drink preventing UTIs and renal inflammation in long-term care facilities saw roselle drinks to be effective [6].

These include:The BTD gene encodes biotinidase, an enzyme that recycles biotin. Biotinidase transports free biotin through the bloodstream and attaches biotin to other proteins [16].     Third bottle of this I’ve had, the best colostrum out there. It tastes so delicious out of the capsule, even one pill somehow manages to improve digestion, give my skin a bit of a glow and give me a mood boost! I don’t know what it’s doing to have that effect on my mood, lowering inflammation in the gut or immune enhancing I don’t know, but it’s also stimulating and hard to sleep for me if I take too much, so I have to go slow.     I will have to check again next month to make sure it is this medicine that helped me and shocked me. My TSH on October 16 was just over 100. On that day I started with 6 capsules a day, I got tested today, and my TSH is 12, that is a massive drop within 2 months. I took adrenal with this at 4 caps a day. I never noticed anything physically, like less brain fog, more energy....although my toilet is much better. I will report back in another 2 months, I should have normal TSh range. :) Along with taking this medicine, I have done Ujjai pranayam, a special way of breathing for 10 mins a day, and general exercise and I drank a teaspoon of coriander in warm water every other day.
