Hydrogen’s ability to easily cross biological membranes, such as the double membrane surrounding mitochondria, allows easy entrance and quick action for those experiencing the increase in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species often associated with fatigue from disease states, stress, or high-intensity exercise [20].
In both animal and human studies, hydrogen has been shown to improve energy thanks to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even gene-level effects. It works within the mitochondria to quell hydroxyl radicals and block specific inflammatory pathways, such as the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Multiple studies have shown that supplemental hydrogen leads not only to weight loss but also improved body composition (fat-to-muscle ratio) [21,22].
In a study of middle-aged, overweight women, four weeks of hydrogen supplementation led to decreases in body fat percentage, serum triglycerides, and fasting serum insulin, likely due to hydrogen’s influence on obesity-associated mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation.
The participants also experienced an increase in the endogenous antioxidant CoQ10 along with an improved lactate-to-pyruvate ratio, indicating positive mitochondrial outcomes [23].
Immune Balance
Investigations into the effects of hydrogen on autoimmune disease show a delay in the progression of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an experimental form of multiple sclerosis.
Disease severity, central nervous system infiltration, and demyelination were reduced when hydrogen was administered after the onset of the disease [24].
Supplemental hydrogen’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, specifically its ability to scavenge hydroxyl radicals, make it a promising therapy for those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
After 4 weeks of drinking hydrogen-enriched water, patients with RA had lower levels of oxidative marker 8-OHdG and decreased disease activity.
Those with early RA achieved disease remission (25,26).
Cognitive Performance
A small study of hydrogen supplementation’s effect on cognitive function in older women found that those who received hydrogen scored significantly better on tests of mental function, including improvements in word recall and word recognition.
The authors report that the average cognitive enhancement was significant enough for the group to progress from mild dementia at baseline to normal cognition at follow-up [27].
A second joint study examined memory-impaired animals and humans with mild cognitive decline. In mice, hydrogen water reduced oxidative stress, suppressed memory impairment and neurodegeneration, and even extended lifespan.
After one year of hydrogen water, human participants with the APOE4 genotype, a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, scored significantly better on the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale, while the control group received slightly worse scores [28].

Metabolic Protection
A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of 30 men and 30 women with metabolic syndrome found that 24 weeks of hydrogen water consumption led to:
18.5 mg/dL reduction in total cholesterol
47 mg/dL reduction in triglycerides
18.4 mg/dL reduction in fasting glucose
12% reduction in HbA1c
Reduction of inflammatory markers TNF-a, IL-6, and CRP
Additionally, the antioxidant vitamins E and C significantly increased in the group drinking hydrogen water.
These effects are likely due to hydrogen’s antioxidant capabilities but may also be related to its positive influence on the electron transport chain, the series of biochemical steps leading to ATP production [29].
Skin Health
Hydrogen-rich water may be both internally and externally beneficial for the skin! One small Japanese study found that direct application of hydrogen water to the skin significantly decreased wrinkles, skin blotchiness, and modulated oiliness, meaning it reduced oiliness in participants with excessively oily skin and increased it in participants with dry skin.
The authors speculate that the potent antioxidant action of hydrogen water was responsible for mitigating reactive oxygen species damage that leads to skin aging [30].
Hydrogen also shows promise for those healing from skin damage due to radiation. In a recent animal study, radiation-induced skin wounds healed more quickly in the group sprayed with hydrogen water, likely due to lowered levels of malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress, and IL-6, an inflammatory marker. Further, the wounds treated with hydrogen water had increased superoxide dismutase activity, an endogenous antioxidant enzyme [31].
Exercise Performance & Recovery
The influence of supplemental hydrogen on athletic performance reveals that even short-term supplementation may have positive benefits on endurance, fatigue, respiratory rate, heart rate, blood lactate levels, and perceived effort [32, 33, 34].
