Jīng 精 is the Chinese word for "essence". Along with qi (animating wind) and shén (spirit), it is considered one of the Three Treasures of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Jīng or Essence can be summarised in two parts: the Yin, being congenital or prenatal, and the Yang, being postnatal or acquired. Prenatal Jing is acquired at birth from the parents: the father's sperm and the mother's ovum. This is a similar concept to DNA. Postnatal Jing is acquired after birth through food, water, oxygen, as well as environmental and social conditions—very much like the concept of epigenetics. Jing essence can be exhausted through stress, sickness, injury, childbirth, excessive sexual activity and the natural processes of ageing. Lost Jing results in decreased vitality, lowered immunity, loss of strength and endurance, a sunken mental state and rapid ageing. However, there are a number of methods that can be applied in order to restore our spent vitality, one of which is the unique classification of powerful Jing tonics according to traditional eastern medicine.
Nyishar Jing Redux is a perfectly balanced formula that restores both the yin and yang aspects of our deepest vitality - our innate reservoir of Jing. This formula offers excellent support when recovering from stress and exhaustion and facilitates physical healing of the joints and connective tissue. Traditionally this formula was used when deep revitalisation was needed, and when both men and women were attempting to increase and rebuild reproductive fertility.
The original Jing Redux formula has now expanded to include Himalayan Shilajit and Deer Antler Velvet. This further enhances the Jing restoring properties of this medicine as well as exponentially increasing its potency. This is by far the strongest and most effective incarnation of Jing Redux yet. Every ingredient undergoes a multi-step extraction process in order to ensure maximum bioavailability and efficacy.
There are a total of seven medicinal herbs that synergistically collaborate to create Jing Redux. Here is a breakdown of the formula and how it works:
Himalayan Shilajit
This is the primary, chief herbal extract in this formula. Shilajit has been a revered herbal substance in Ayurvedic, Tibetan, Unani-Tibb and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Ayurveda has always referred to this substance as 'the destroyer of weakness' and the 'conqueror of mountains' in reference to its unrivalled fortification of body and mind, restoring them to their maximum state of strength and vitality.
Shilajit contains over 80 different bioavailable ionic trace minerals, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, as well as humic and fulvic acids. Fulvic acid is understood to regulate blood pressure/sugar/lipids, as well as improve digestion, immune function, increase muscle strength and stamina, while also influencing the healthy production of steroid hormones.
Shilajit is also known to improve the efficiency of intra-cellular metabolism and has been used for many centuries as an amplifying medicine, due to its ability to elevate the potency and utility of all other medicines it is taken with. This 'potentiating' quality is driven by a number of compounds including dibenzo-alpha-pyrones - metabolites that proliferate throughout Shilajit. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, Shilajit is a superior grade jing herb that is deeply restorative but also encourages the healthy circulation of our subtle energies (qi) and has a stabilising and clarifying effect on the mind and emotions (shen).
According to a collective anthology of scientific research on the health benefits of Shilajit (Carlos Carrasco-Gallardo et al, 2021), preclinical and clinical studies have determined shilajit to be a potential medicine for inflammation, pain relief, diabetes, treatment of gastric ulcers, infectious diseases and modulating immune function.
However, the current emphasis of western scientific medicine is to explore the neuro-protective properties of Shilajit and its role in the treatment of cognitive disorders and dementia. In 2011 the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease reported on a study that was conducted by A Cornejo et al, which found that the fulvic acid in Shilajit can inhibit the formation of tau fibrils and amyloid plaque that is synonymous with the progression of dementia. It is also currently being studied as an anxiolytic medicine. At the Institute of Medical Sciences in Varanasi, AK Jaiswal et al conducted an in vivo trial where Shilajit was shown to dramatically reduce anxiety and improve memory in test subjects.
Traditionally, Shilajit was recommended when the pathology had a hidden or deep-rooted nature, because it can amplify the therapeutic effects of an entourage of medicines that it is taken with. In Tibetan medicine this type of substance is known as a 'medicine horse', because it is like a powerful horse that the medicine rides quickly and efficiently to the site of the body that needs to be healed. Interestingly, this theory was explored in 2021 from Mohd Aamir Mirza et al. The study focused on the humic acids in Shilajit and how they can dramatically increase the absorption and utility of pharmaceutical drugs. In the study, the solubility of the anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine was increased by an enormous 1742%. The sustained release of the drug into the blood improved by 78% and its absorption increased by 3.5 times.
Deer Antler Velvet
Deer Antler Velvet is another natural healing product utilised for more than two thousand years in traditional Asian medical systems. It is regarded in TCM as one of the absolute finest medicines for restoring our depleted essence and for regenerating the body and mind. About two months after the antlers begin to grow, they are still very pliable, filled with blood and an assortment of growth factors, and the outer surface is soft and velvety.
Antlers are a very special phenomenon in nature, in that they are a complex organ which completely regenerates every single year. While the antlers are still young (before they harden) they can completely renew any loss through damage or injury. When harvested, only the last few inches are collected, and it is the outermost tips of these segments that are the most therapeutically useful, because this is where the highest concentration of transforming growth factors, ecto-saponins, collagen and androgenic growth hormones are found. When harvested ethically and conscientiously, the tips of the budding new antlers regenerate rapidly (2cm per day) and have zero negative impact on their structure and function during the rutting season later in the year.
Traditionally Deer Antler Velvet extract was utilised as a profound restorative medicine. TCM understands this medicine to restore both the yin and especially the yang aspects of Jing and act as a heart tonic that fortifies and regulates blood circulation, as well as the circulation of subtle energies throughout the meridians of the body and mind. Correspondingly, this promotes a radiance that is also expressed through a more healthy emotional balance and stable perception of the mind. Deer Antler Velvet has also been used with great success in treating fertility and libido in both men and women.
Since the early 1930's, almost 300 different research papers have been published within scientific literature, expounding the benefits of this unique medicine and investigating the compounds that may be responsible. Deer Antler Velvet tips contain a high concentration of type II collagen, which has proven itself very useful in the treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. According to a 1993 research paper by Trentham et al entitled 'Effects of oral administration of type II collagen on rheumatoid arthritis', Deer Antler Velvet can promote healthy collagen synthesis and optimal maintenance of joint cartilage. Also, type II collagen can help to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and hence decrease inflammation in the affected joints, a phenomenon that was investigated in detail by Kalden and Sieper et al in their 1998 report 'Oral collagen in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis'. The bioavailable glucosamine, chondroitin, prostaglandins, pantocrin and hyaluronic acid in Deer Antler Velvet can also further support arthritic joint care from their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as reported in the Canadian Journal of Animal Science in 1997 in an article named 'Glycosaminoglycans from growing antlers of Cervus sp.' by Sim and Sun-woo et al. The Medical Hypothesis Journal also reported similar findings in 'Hyaluronic acid and high-dose glucosamine in the treatment of oste-arthritis' by McCarthy et al in 1998.
In vivo research has also proven high quality Deer Antler Velvet to be an immune amphoteric - a medicine that acts as an adaptogen to the immune system, either stimulating or pacifying the activity of immune cells according to the needs of the biological environment. This offers a broad spectrum of potential benefits in the treatment of numerous immunological diseases, as determined by a spate of scientific research throughout the 90's (conducted by Suttie et al in 1996 and Church et al in 1999) which focused specifically on Deer Antler Velvet and how it modulates immune function. This in vivo research focused primarily on its beneficial effects on viral infections, tumour growth and chemotherapy.
The anti-stress and exhaustion properties of Deer Antler Velvet are one of the most timely benefits for modern humans. It has been prescribed for centuries in cases of exhaustion and severe depletion, and more recent scientific findings have been confirming these benefits from a biochemical perspective. In a human trial that was conducted at the turn of this century, Fisher et al observed the physical training regimen of an entire police squadron in Edmonton, Alberta, and how the test subjects were influenced by the consumption of this medicine. 80% of participants exhibited significant cardiovascular benefits - the more efficient regulation of blood pressure and serum cholesterol caused the parasympathetic nervous system to activate more quickly after exercise, which improved circulation and lowered stress.
In the 1980's, Fulder et al explained that the unique glycosides in Deer Antler Velvet had a direct influence on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain. These glands are the master regulators of our stress response and control the function of the adrenal glands. This is understood (in part) to be the reason why this medicine is such a potent adaptogen.
Deer Antler Velvet contains numerous growth hormone precursors which can help with repair and regeneration of muscle tissue, cartilage and bone, as well as metabolising excess body fat and raising energy levels. This assortment of hormonal precursors include amino acids like valine, leucine and isoleucine alongside associated minerals and trace minerals such as magnesium and zinc. This is partly why Deer Antler Velvet is so anabolic and able to stimulate such rapid growth and repair of the antlers during springtime. In the aforementioned study on the Edmonton police force, Fisher et al discovered that oral supplementation increased blood plasma testosterone levels by up to six times the base level.
In a Russian study as far back as 1974, Yudin and Dubryakov et al observed that the pantocrin in Deer Antler Velvet enabled a threefold increase in dynamic output and post-workout recovery in track athletes when compared to the control group that didn't receive the medicine. Overall, this adaptogenic result was understood to be caused by not only pantocrin, but the complex interdependence between many compounds.
Both Shilajit and Deer Antler Velvet are the new driving forces that direct the medicinal attributes of the Jing Redux formula for obvious reason, however let's take a look at the original herbs that create this restorative product:
Prepared He Shou Wu
The primary essence replenishing tonic of Chinese herbal medicine - prepared He Shou Wu restores the yin quality of our jing vitality. This herb received a detailed entry in the Chinese medicine classic 'The Great Compendium of Herbs' by Li Shizhen in 1596, where it was stated that daily use for one year would completely restore youthful vitality. It is an organ tonic to both the kidneys and liver and helps to enrich the blood. Throughout history this medicine has been known to reverse grey hair, restore bone density and healthy joint mobility, and has been utilised throughout Asia for many centuries as a powerful anti-ageing tonic. Prepared He Shou Wu is also central to the majority of fertility formulas in Chinese medicine - it can increase sperm count and improve vitality of the ova. It is also widely used as a postpartum recovery agent for women, due to its deeply restorative yin jing properties.
This herb can significantly increase one of the body's master antioxidant enzymes known as superoxide dismutase (SOD), which contributes to its longevity effects. This herb should be cooked in a black bean stew in order to activate its potential as a tonic adaptogen. The unprepared herb is a totally different type of medicine - more of a laxative than a restorative. In order to receive the yin jing properties, the tuber must first be three to four years old and needs to be 'prepared' prior to consumption. This will yield the premium quality, deeply regenerative medicine for rebuilding our lost essence and vitality.
Prepared He Shou Wu has a heavy and moist energy as a medicine which makes it very grounding and stabilising, but it should be combined with other medicines that exhibit more of a lighter, warm and dry energy in order to balance these polarities and ensure the medicine is the most effective.
Prepared Rehmannia
One of the quintessential 'yin jing' herbs of Chinese medicine, prepared rehmannia is one of the most restorative herbs to the kidneys, adrenals and to our reproductive fertility, and as such can be combined with Prepared He Shou Wu for optimal replenishment of our vital essence. Not unlike He Shou Wu, it is excellent for nourishing the blood and is a tonic for the liver and heart. The process of macerating and 'preparing' this herb in a tonic wine causes its revitalising properties to become exponentially more powerful. Chinese medicine has always prescribed this herb for rebuilding the body and mind after stress or trauma of some kind, after energy reserves have been depleted and for mitigating the symptoms of ageing. It can replenish marrow and increase bone density, and as the physical reserves of the body are restored, it can serve as a stable foundation for the mind to settle and function with greater efficiency.
This has in fact been the focus of modern pharmacological studies - prepared rehmannia has been observed to repair structural abnormalities in the cerebral cortex. In 2018, Haixia Yuan et al found that catalpol (a unique glycoside found in rehmannia) can increase brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor (BDNF), which is a protein that promotes the survival of neurons within the brain. This in vivo trial showed that impulsive, hyperactive and destructive behaviour decreased and brain cell survival increased when test subjects were given an extract of prepared rehmannia.
Astragalus Root
Astragalus has over 2000 years of documented use throughout Asian medical systems. It is not categorised as a Jing herb itself, however it is one of the premier Qi tonics that supports the animation and healthy circulation of our deepest vitality reserves. Astragalus is a tonic to the spleen and the lungs and nourishes our 'wei qi', which is considered to be a subtle protective forcefield that circulates on the surface of the body. This helps to remove obstruction within the subtle channels of the body and ensure the efficient circulation of all fluids and subtle winds, as well as fortify the first line of defence of the immune system. This is very important because through stress, exhaustion, depletion and ageing, our 'wei qi' and also our 'upright qi' can become weaker, contributing to poor posture, organ prolapse and poor circulation. As a qi tonic, Astragalus can help to rectify such issues during the process of restoring our depleted jing essence.
Astragalus has long been used as a respiratory tonic as it is understood to strengthen the lung qi and fortify lung capacity while preventing and treating many pathologies of the lungs. Modern medicine has arrived at similar conclusions, albeit from a different standpoint. A 2013 stduy from Chuan Zou et al found that consistent use of high quality Astragalus could reduce bronchial inflammation and bolster the immune response when dealing with allergies and treating infections of the upper respiratory tract. Astragalus facilitated deeper breathing, a decrease in fatigue and eventually allowed patients to eliminate dependency on the drug prednisone.
With its warm, light and yang nature, Astragalus combines perfectly with the heavy, colder and more restorative properties of both Prepared He Shou Wu and Rehmannia. It can stimulate the processes of digestion and improve the nutrient extraction from the food we consume, helping to further strengthen the blood and alongside the circulating wei qi on the surface membrane of the body, it can help to transform the skin to a more radiant complexion.
Astragalus has been employed as a highly effective immune system adaptogen for millennia, which is an area of interest that modern scientific medicine has been investigating for many decades now. More than 200 different compounds have been identified in Astragalus, with its range of polysaccharides, flavonoids and saponins among the most studied. The Peking University Health Science Centre in Beijing found that the polysaccharides, flavonoids and triterpenoid saponins in Astragalus could work synergistically to promote greater adaptivity amongst immune cells. Extracts were found to restore balance in the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines which enhanced the immune response to infection, as well as improving the function of lymphocytes within the body.
Interestingly, a unique chemical called TA-65 has been isolated from Astragalus which has been studied for its broad anti-ageing properties. The root of these benefits is considered to be the fact that TA-65 can increase the length of telomeres. Telomeres are structural proteins found at each end of a chromosome. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres shorten, until eventually they completely run out and the cell dies. This process underlies all disease and ultimately, death. However, TA-65 activates an enzyme called telomerase which is in fact responsible for cleaving new sections of DNA which then get added to existing telomeres. This prevents the cell from dying and enables it to live in a functional state for longer. There have been many investigations into TA-65 and its ability to regenerate telomeres, including a comprehensive investigation of Astragalus in 2017 by Ping Liu et al for the National Science Foundation in China.
Eucommia Bark
Medicinal Eucommia comes from bark that is annually removed from the only species of rubber tree to proliferate within a temperate climate. Sandwiched within the core of the bark is a type of latex - very pliable and elastic - which is where the concentration of medicine can be found. According to Chinese medicine, Eucommia possesses the ability to restore both the yin and yang aspects of the Jing essence, although its energy is predominantly yang. It offers tonic benefits to the kidneys and liver, and is traditionally used to restore spent vitality, to speed up the healing process and to increase reproductive vitality in both men and women. The elasticity at the core of Eucommia is understood to rebuild the physical structure of the body - to promote bone density and the elasticity of cartilage and other connective tissues. This is why Eucommia was routinely prescribed for centuries when treating many kinds of stress, because it could help to reverse the destructive physical toll that stress can inflict upon the body. This also made it central to many herbal formulas for treating arthritis and for injury recovery.
Contemporary investigations into Eucommia have revealed that it contains a spectrum of different therapeutic compounds including phenols, lignans, terpenoids, sterols and polysaccharides. A 2016 study led by Tarique Hussein et al explained that Eucommia exhibited cardiovascular benefits and helped to regulate blood pressure, was a very useful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory medicine with immunological properties including antiviral and antibacterial actions. It also showed legitimate potential in the inhibition of neuro-degenerative conditions that lead to dementia by reversing the formation of amyloid plaques, and also demonstrated a protective influence over liver cells.
Scientific enquiry of Eucommia has also verified its use as a physcial healing catalyst for bones and connective tissue - glycosides found in the extracts of this species significantly increased bone mineral density and femur strength for in vivo test subjects. A 2007 study from Victor Y C Ong et al published in the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal stated that Eucommia extract induced the release of growth hormone responsible for bone remodelling.
Epimedium Leaf
Epimedium is a powerful Jing tonic that is predominantly yang in nature. It has been used for centuries as a reproductive herb for men and women as it is very energising and can stimulate the libido, and is used in female fertility formulas and also when treating erectile dysfunction. Epimedium is typically included in smaller quantities within larger formulas that contain other yin tonics to counterbalance its 'outpouring energy'. Framed within this kind of herbal context, Epimedium is an incredible medicine for replenishing vitality, and indeed, using that vitality. It is also a tonic to the liver and kidneys, as well as being an excellent qi tonic that can help to animate our vitality once restored. It has a warm and drying nature, so again, is best formulated alongside other medicines with cooler, softer and smoother characteristics.
More recently Epimedium has been scrutinised in both laboratory and clinical settings in order to determine what the benefits are as well as their mode of action. Firstly, it has proven itself as an anti-fatigue herb that can promote greater bone density, while also helping with arthritic nerve pain and inflammation, as well as a cardiovascular adaptogen that is used in the treatment of hypertension. Icariin - a unique glycoside that has been isolated from this species - is believed to be a major component in these cardiovascular benefits. An in vivo study in 2010 performed by Alan W. Shindel et al also indicated that icariin was effective at stimulating nerves within the genital regions and as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
